My First Soccer Season at DVHS

After being away from coaching for a few years I decided it was time to get back into it.  I didn't realize how much I missed it until I stepped back on that field and started coaching a group of amazing girls.  The girl's soccer program at Deer Valley High School is a great fit for me.  They had 4 wins and 12 losses last year, and there are only a few club players on the team.  This is a program that I can help build and there are so many things that I can teach these girls both about soccer and hopefully about life.  Being a coach is so rewarding in many ways, seeing the look on a players face when she finally "gets it" or when everything she has been learning falls into place and works individually.  Or even better when they start playing as a team and learn to trust and rely on each other.

I spent a lot of time this season teaching the girls proper form and skill, how to play a new formation, and how to move as a team.  I could not have asked for a better group of girls for my first season at DVHS, the girls were very eager to learn.  Their excitement to learn increased as they started seeing little bits of success.  They did everything I asked them to do with minimal complaining (they are girls, so there will be some complaining!).

We host a tournament every year, last year they took 8th place in the tournament and this year we moved up to 4th!!  Their record last year was 4-12 and this year we ended 5-9-2.  The girls really exceeded my expectations this year and I am so excited to see what the next season brings.

Here are some of the extra "perks" that come with being a coach!

Helping players
when they lock their keys in their car...only to find out the keys weren't in there.

As a coach, you know you are loved when you get toilet papered!

Choosing who you get to work with!  I had the opportunity to add a 3rd coach part way through the season and luckily my friend Maggie is living here for a year.
